Hazardous Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Spouse, And Encouragement For Affirmative Change

It took more than a few years but Sarah eventually made up her mind that she had enough with her husband's careless and abusive drinking. She was tired of seeing Keith come home in the early hours of the morning from drinking instead of spending much needed time with the family. She was also exhausted from the third DWI Keith recently got. Furthermore she was drained from making justifications for her husband when he couldn't make it to work on time due to his abusive drinking.

In a similar manner, she was worried about the fact that their relationship was going downhill due to Keith's careless drinking. And lastly she was tired of the uncertain financial situation into which he had placed his family due to his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior.

One Wednesday morning when Sarah was pondering what she could do about her husband's careless drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something to cut into the destructive cycle of Keith's careless drinking behavior. So Sarah looked on the web under "alcohol treatment" and found scores of rehabilitation clinics that were all located less than twenty-five miles away from where she and Keith lived.

When Sarah called each treatment center she introduced herself and said that Keith, her spouse, was exhibiting careless drinking behavior. She also articulated that her husband had a top-rate health insurance at work and that outpatient or inpatient alcohol rehab would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health network prescribed the rehabilitation.

After listening to Sarah discuss her husband's excessive and hazardous drinking, the therapist in a caring but firm way told Sarah how she more likely than not contributed to her spouse's careless drinking through the years. How? Essentially by rationalizing his drinking rather than letting him experience the results of his careless drinking behavior.

Stated more precisely, the therapist told Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's careless and excessive drinking behavior. The therapist also stressed the point that Sarah would not be able to control her husband's conduct. With the guidance and support of the rehab team at the healthcare center, however, she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Keith's careless and hazardous drinking but she would also be able to learn how to encourage him to schedule an appointment at the treatment center so that he could discuss his careless and excessive drinking behavior with a therapist.

The good news was that after Sarah revealed this to Keith and he saw that she was serious, he told her that he had been extremely worried about his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior and that he was somewhat thankful to hear that Sarah wanted to do something helpful about his careless and hazardous drinking behavior. Consequently, he made an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol treatment facility.

While simply calling a treatment clinic does not ensure that a person's careless and hazardous drinking behavior will become less problematic or that a person will automatically be more willing to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is evidently a necessary feature in the treatment process. And because Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting rehabilitation for his excessive and careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the likelihood of a successful recovery was considerably increased.
