Small Breed Dog Training
Why dog lovers have got this preconceived belief that small dogs are more hard to condition than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to figure out. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should never be difficult.
Small dog training, is no different from training a dog of any other larger sized breed. While training any pup will have its peculiarities, related to its breed, almost all other facets remain the same, and the method to training the puppy should stay the same, regardless its size.
Having said that, I will grant an allowance here, and agrree that small dog training may create complications in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nonetheless, this is not because the size of the dog breed is small, but ten times out of ten, because of the owner.
If a smaller breed puppy is aggressive and cannot be disciplined, or if a smaller breed dog cannot be crate trained or poses difficulties in being bathroom trained, it is the owner who has not knowingly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us analyze how and why.
Aggression.
Small dogs are liked because they are pretty, they are like toy characters. Owners delight in having their pet sit on their laps. This kind of indulgence is where the trouble commences. The basic aggressive trait of the dog, is to assert ownership over its space, its food, even its trainer; all canines need to be the alpha dog.
It is the aggressive streak in the puppy that provokes it to climb on to the lap of its owner, particularly when there are plenty of humans gathered in the room.
This is a obvious act of aggression. Instead of chiding the pup, every owner bar no one, would fondle the pup, even though it jumped on to their lap without being called, developing the aggressive streak in the pup. As a result the owner has okayed the pup's basic instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting mad at a bigger dog is another obvious act of violence. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is seen as cute, because one dog is tiny while the other is large. Most owners cuddle the pooch instead of checking it, when it exhibits this aggression with a larger dog.
The above are but illustrations as to why small puppies are aggressive, and not because small dog training is complicated.
Crate Training
Owners have a propensity to lug their small pups around no matter where they are, even when they are in the house and that makes it plain difficult to potty train them
It is, as if by instinct that the owners of miniature breed dogs to cart the animal to the place where the pup should go to the toilet and then carry it back into the house.
It is this practice of carrying the dog to the outdoors to poop that is the root of all complications. In addition, because the pup is by and large carried around so often it has no way of it telling or alerting the owner that it has to make its business.
Small dog training begins with treating the dog as any other normal dog. They have to be shown their bathroom area on a leash. If owners cease carrying their small sized dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most important part of dog training, and so it has to be, even in Small Dog Training.
