When I was just a child I can tenderly reminisce sitting on an antique barber chair at the community barber shop and observing my father getting a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is in our day. There was an knack to it. The barber really cared about what he was doing and it was apparent that my father loved it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where gentlemen could socialize amongst themselves.
The haircuts were at all times so detailed. My dad would be sitting in one of the countless used barber chairs while the barber would purposely take his time to provide the flawless cut. Most men kept their hair short as that was the manner back then. Following the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we think of today, with foam from a can and a molded disposable razor. Instead, the lather was put on with a badger brush and a straight blade razor was employed. It looks intimidating, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever obtain. After the shave was the hot towel that every time felt so good.
The men would principally banter about baseball or politics, though the subject of women would come up a great deal. It was a time to be at ease and get to know each of us a bit better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you commonly attempt to get out as soon as you can.
As I saunter by the local barber shop and spot the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I speculate why this practice has mostly vanished from our civilization. Do people not value a good hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an some time socializing with our pals and neighbors seems like a difficult task? While I am not one to be angry and only yearn for for "how things were", I do desire that people will think of and think a lot of the way it was just a few decades ago.
