Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Connection Between Alcohol Abuse And Coping Skills, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Education
Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? More than a few alcohol dependency specialists assert that wine, liquor, and beer advertisements brought into being by the media are a major reason for the increase in teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcohol abuse consultants declare that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and convenience of beer, wine, and liquor in our society. Still other alcohol addiction specialists believe that many of our teenagers get involved in risky drinking because of the increased fretfulness that they feel.
From a slightly different point of view, due to the fact that both parents in many families are gainfully employed, the lack of parental guidance unquestionably has to play a significant role in the rise in adolescent alcohol abuse. And last of all, various alcohol abuse experts declare that the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse is due, at some level, to our lenient society.
One feature of youth alcohol abuse that seems to be lacking in the alcohol abuse research results, in spite of this, is the lack of educational courses that teach students how to augment their coping skills so that their excessive and careless drinking behavior is significantly reduced or eliminated. Stated more precisely, scientific research has demonstrated that there is an indirect link between poor coping skills and unhealthy drinking.
In effect, this means that the more mediocre the coping skills, the higher the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a valid contention, why isn't coping skills training an important part of the academic prospectus in all of our high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools?
Let us create a scenario for illustrative purposes. Let us imagine a society in which students are taught how to achieve solid coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school. In such a society, when life gets demanding, people who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a healthier and more productive manner, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into operation.
Stated differently, students who reveal good coping skills will be more able to think clearly and show signs of quality decision making as opposed to students who, because they lack top quality coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of hazardous drinking.
What would happen in the above "ideal" society, in addition, if teens not only got exceptional coping skills training but also received a first-rate education that stressed the long term and short term negative costs associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills training, it is asserted, would help students stay away from the obvious charm associated with youth drinking and, as a consequence, would notably diminish the alcohol abuse exhibited by teenagers in our country.
There are evidently several valid reasons why so many of our teens drink in an abusive manner. Such a knotty predicament demands a comprehensive and relevant response by our educators, politicians, parents, and students so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's difficulties in a more productive and accountable way instead of gravitating to hazardous drinking to solve their problems.
